Locating the support you both need
Your loved one may need assistance with taking care of their heath and, if they are older, taking care of their home. That is a lot to handle, and you may need help that comes right to their home.
Here is a look at the resources available through BCBSRI plans and in the community.
Connect with your local agency on aging.
If your loved one is older, you can contact your local agency on aging to get information on in-home care support as well as local caregiving services.
Through The Point—which is part of the RI Office of Healthy Aging—you can talk with a specialist and get connected to resources for free. The Point provides assistance for adults who are 55+ and adults living with disabilities. Visit The Point website or call (401) 462-4444. Live outside of Rhode Island? Enter your ZIP code on the national Eldercare Locator website to find your local agency.
Ask your child’s school about available resources.
If your child is struggling with a health issue, talk to the school about services that can help your child keep up with their schoolwork at home and provide other support.
If your child is struggling with a mental health issue, this BCBSRI “how-to" guide can help you locate the care your child needs, including in schools, in the community, and through your BCBSRI health plan.
Look into care that can give you a break.
There are times when you can’t be available because of work or an illness or when you simply need a rest to avoid burnout. Try to have family members or friends that can provide care on a regular basis or who can be called on if needed.
If you live in Rhode Island, look into the CareBreaks program. It connects families to in-home respite care and/or adult-day health center programming for loved ones in need. This program is available to all Rhode Island families. Visit The Point website or call (401) 462-4444.
