We would like to make you aware of the rise in Durable Medical Equipment (DME) fraud and the various tactics employed by these companies to deceive both you and our members. It is important to remember that faxed DME orders are often used to persuade physicians to authorize medically unnecessary equipment, originating from cold-calling and soliciting vulnerable members who may inadvertently disclose their personal information. Please refrain from signing these orders. Instead, contact your patients to assess their need for DME and suggest that they request it from their healthcare provider if necessary.
There has been an increase in instances where DME fraudsters request medical records via fax while impersonating Blue Cross or other insurance companies. Please exercise caution when receiving such requests and ensure that the request is legitimate. Fraudulent DME companies often use these records to try to substantiate their false claims and may manipulate them to falsely indicate a need for DME.
